Which Product Should You Use?

The substance must be identified before a neutralising powder is selected.

Use a Mineral Absorbent When…

The product is confirmed as compatible and the objective is to absorb the liquid physically so that it can be collected from the affected surface.

Use an Acid Neutraliser When…

The spilled substance is known to be acidic and the selected product is confirmed as suitable for that acid and its concentration.

Use an Alkali Neutraliser When…

The spilled substance is a known alkaline or caustic liquid and the product instructions confirm that it is suitable for the material involved.

Absorption and Neutralisation Are Different Processes

Selecting the wrong product could leave the original hazard untreated or create an unwanted chemical reaction.

Physical Absorption

A mineral absorbent takes liquid into or onto its structure, creating a residue that can be collected from the affected area.

The absorbed substance may still retain its original corrosive, toxic, flammable or environmentally hazardous properties. The used absorbent must therefore be handled and disposed of according to the liquid it contains.

Chemical Neutralisation

A neutralising powder reacts with an acid or alkali to move its pH towards a specified range. Acid and alkali neutralisers use different formulations.

The process may generate heat, bubbling, vapour or other reaction effects. Product instructions, compatibility limits, application quantities and confirmation methods must be followed.

Why Choose a Loose Chemical Absorbent?

Loose absorbents can make close contact with liquid on rough, porous or uneven surfaces where a flat pad may bridge across joints, recesses and textured flooring.

The material can be distributed according to the shape of the affected area, making it useful for irregular spills and residues around equipment, machinery bases, floor joints and workshop surfaces.

Never Use a Neutraliser on an Unidentified Spill

Acid and alkali neutralisers are not interchangeable. The wrong product may fail to treat the hazard or could cause an uncontrolled reaction. Identify the substance and confirm compatibility before application.

Wear suitable personal protective equipment and consider ventilation, possible heat generation, splashing, bubbling and vapour release. Apply the product gradually where instructed and maintain a safe working distance.

Neutralised or absorbed material should not automatically be assumed to be suitable for general waste. Follow the Safety Data Sheet, product instructions, site procedure and applicable waste-classification requirements.
