Choose a compact pillow for confined spaces and smaller leak points, or a larger cushion where greater surface coverage and local absorbency are required.
Compact pillows fit beneath pipe joints, taps, valves, laboratory equipment and smaller containers where a full-size cushion may be difficult to position.
Medium-size pillows provide greater contact with pooled liquid while remaining easy to position beneath drums, pipework, machinery and process equipment.
Larger cushions provide more surface coverage and absorbency beneath substantial equipment, storage vessels and persistent industrial leaks.
Chemical absorbent pillows are filled absorbent products designed to hold a larger volume of liquid within a compact area. Unlike a flat pad, their deeper construction allows them to collect liquid from persistent leaks and concentrated pools over a longer period.
They are particularly useful beneath valves, pipe joints, drums, tanks and machinery where liquid is dripping into a defined area. Their flexible shape allows them to settle beneath equipment or make contact with shallow pools on uneven surfaces.
Chemical pillows and cushions are normally yellow so they can be distinguished from white oil-only and grey general-purpose absorbents. Depending on the individual product and confirmed compatibility, they may be used with many acids, alkalis, solvents, coolants and water-based process liquids.
Pillows are intended primarily for absorbing liquid rather than creating a containment perimeter. Where a spill is spreading, compatible socks or booms should normally be placed around the liquid before pillows are deployed within the contained area.
Consider the available space, the size and duration of the leak, the expected liquid volume and the required chemical compatibility.
Check that the pillow can sit directly beneath the leak without obstructing access, controls or safe working areas.
Allow for the liquid already present and any continued leakage before the source can be isolated or repaired.
Place the pillow as close as safely possible to the leak so liquid reaches the absorbent before spreading further.
Confirm that the selected pillow and its outer material are suitable for the specific substance being absorbed.
Follow the workplace spill procedure and the Safety Data Sheet for the liquid involved.
Identify the liquid where possible, isolate the area and wear the personal protective equipment required by the risk assessment.
Where trained and safe to do so, stop or reduce the leak before placing absorbents beneath the equipment.
Use compatible socks if the liquid is spreading, then place the pillow directly into the contained pool or beneath the drip point.
Check the pillow regularly and replace it before saturation. Collect all used materials in a suitable waste container.

No chemical absorbent pillow should be assumed to be suitable for every liquid. Review the chemical’s Safety Data Sheet, the individual product information and your workplace risk assessment before use.
Absorption does not neutralise the chemical. A used pillow may remain corrosive, toxic, flammable or otherwise hazardous and should be handled, stored and disposed of according to the substance absorbed.
Pillows used beneath an ongoing leak should be inspected regularly and replaced before they become saturated, damaged or likely to release retained liquid.
